Good Backups are Essential
Business critical data should be backed up every day in order to minimize downtime in the event of data loss. In addition the server backup should be stored in a secure, off-site location to prevent data loss in the event of a fire, theft, and/or natural disaster.
Critical data includes:

A two phase backup solution is recommended, a local/on-site backup and a remote off-site backup.
Local backup solutions include backup to external hard drive, tape or other external media. External hard drives are the best choice. They are affordable and backups and restores can be completed in minutes instead of hours. If your backup is on-site, you have convenience. If you need to restore some lost or deleted files, you have everything you need right there. You also have control of your data.
With a local backup, if disaster strikes everything may be lost including the backup. For instance, if the building burns down, or your computers are stolen, all of your data will be lost.
